All European countries must share the responsibility of welcoming migrants and help them integrate, Pope Francis said today, calling on states to open “the door of the heart.”
Speaking at the weekly general hearing o Francis, who has made the defense of immigrants and refugees a cornerstone of his office as pope, said he was able to touch on their “injured humanity” during a visit to Cyprus and Greece earlier this month.
“I was also able to see how only a few European countries bear the brunt of the effects of the migration phenomenon in the Mediterranean region,” he said.
“In fact (immigration) calls on everyone to share a responsibility on behalf of all that no country can avoid, because it is a problem of humanity,” he said.
Twelve migrants from refugee structures in Cyprus who are resettled in Italy under the care of Pope Francis arrived last week, the first group of about 50 expected from the island.
THE Φραγκίσκος expressed hope more European countries to allow local Christian organizations to bring in other refugees and immigrants and help them integrate.
“All you need to do is open a door, the door of the heart. “Let us not be inconsistent this Christmas,” said Pope Francis.
