At least 32 people were killed today when a fire broke out on a ferry floating on a river in southern Bangladesh, police said.

“The three-decker Obhijan 10 ferry caught fire in the middle of the river. We have retrieved 32 corpses. The toll of the victims may become even heavier. “Most of the victims died as a result of the fire, some drowned after falling into the river,” the police chief in the area where the accident took place, Mounul Islam, told AFP.

The ship was carrying about 1,000 people when the fire broke out, according to Nazmul Alam, an official in the area.

The tragedy unfolded early in the morning near the town of Jalokati, 250 kilometers south of the capital, Dhaka.

It was added to a series of low-altitude country-like ones that stretch around the delta formed by several rivers.

Experts in this state of 170 million people in South Asia say that the tragic events of this species are due to the lack of maintenance of ships, the overly loose observance of safety regulations and the saturation of ferries, one of the main means of public transport in Bangladesh.
