Stoltenberg: NATO and Ukraine will decide what their relationship will be, not Russia

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has rejected a request from Russia to revoke the Alliance’s 2008 commitment to Ukraine to become a member.

“NATO’s position on our relationship with Ukraine remains unchanged. “It’s a fundamental principle that every nation has the right to choose its own path, including the kind of security it wants to take part in,” Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels.

“NATO’s relationship with Ukraine will be decided by the 30 NATO allies and Ukraine, by no one else. “We can not accept that Russia is trying to re-establish a system under which great powers, such as Russia, have spheres of influence where they can control and decide what the other members are doing.”
