Rescue crews revised the death toll from the floods that swept through the Brazilian state of Bahia in recent days to the worst on Monday, citing 10 dead.
According to Civil Protection, some 20,000 residents were forced to flee their homes. A state of emergency has been declared in 51 cities.
The rains, which lasted almost a week, flooded homes, flooded rivers, cut roads in half, destroyed bridges and blocked towns and villages.
Rescue crews had difficulty accessing the affected areas. On Sunday, more than 200 firefighters and the military rescued civilians at risk with the help of two helicopters.
