Ukrainian troops have retreated from the town of Popasna in eastern Ukraine, the governor of Luhansk said today, confirming earlier reports that the town had been occupied.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said earlier today that his troops had taken control of most of Popasna.

For his part, Luhansk Governor Serhiy Gaidai told Ukrainian television that Ukrainian troops had retreated in search of more protected areas, adding: “Everything has been destroyed there.”
