New Zealand: First case of Omicron sub-variant BA.5


The New Zealand Ministry of Health announced today the detection of the first case of sub-variant BA.5 of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus, during a check at the country’s entrance gate.

The person carrying the BA.5 variant traveled to New Zealand from South Africa. On May 1, the ministry announced the location of the first case of subtype BA.4, which was also carried by a South African national who traveled to the country.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health announced that 12,392 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the community. The rolling daily average of cases in the last week is at 7,510 cases, slightly higher than last Sunday (7,414).

In the past 24 hours, another 3 patients died due to COVID-19, with the official pandemic toll reaching 860 deaths out of a total of 986,261 confirmed infections.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced today through social media sites that she is being isolated, as her partner Clark Geyford was diagnosed with the virus.
