THE First Lady of USA Jill Biden went today to Ukraine in one visit– surprise, announced her spokeswoman and met with its Ukrainian counterpart Olena Zelenska at a school near the border with Slovakia.

“I wanted to come for Mother’s Day. “I thought it was important to show the Ukrainian people that this war must end,” he told reporters, adding that “the American people are on the side of the Ukrainian people.”

Jill Biden was in Slovakia this week, among others, to meet with families of Ukrainian refugees.

Her visit to Ukraine was kept secret until the last minute.

Jill Biden and Olena Zelenska hugged and the First Lady of the United States offered a bouquet of flowers to the wife of the Ukrainian president.

It is the first time that Zelenska has appeared in public since the start of the war on February 24, a US official said. According to the same source, the two women had exchanged messages in recent weeks.

“I wanted to come for Mother’s Day,” Biden told reporters, who were present as soon as the meeting began, in a small classroom of a school that has been turned into a refugee reception center.

Zelenska responded to her in Ukrainian, with her statements translated by an interpreter.

“First of all, I would like to thank you for a very courageous act,” he said.

“Because we understand what it takes for the First Lady of the United States to come here, during a war where military operations take place every day, where air defense sirens sound every day, even today,” Zelenska added.

The closed-door meeting between the two women lasted about an hour, before they met with refugee children.

Jill Biden then left for the border with Slovakia.
