Havana: At least 30 people died at the hotel that collapsed


There are 30 dead from powerful explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havanaaccording to a new report announced tonight by the Ministry of Public Health.

According to the announcement, a total of 84 people were injured in the explosion, of which 24 remain for treatment. Of the 30 dead, 16 were men and 14 women, one of whom was pregnant. Among the victims are four teenagers and children.

Firefighters and rescuers continue to search the wreckage of the iconic hotel, which was closed for maintenance and was set to reopen on May 10th.

Authorities speculate that the explosion was due to a gas leak while the hotel was refueling from a tanker. The first four floors were completely destroyed.

The Saratoga is known because in recent years it has hosted many celebrities, such as Mick Jagger, Beyonce and Madonna. It was built in 1880 to house shops and converted into a hotel in 1933.
