At least 43 inmates were killed in riots in the city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados in Ecuador on Monday. This is reported by the public prosecutor. More than 100 prisoners managed to escape during the riots.
Riots broke out between two rival gangs in Bellavista prison, authorities said. It is located about 80 kilometers from the capital Quito.
“To date, 43 detainees have died, but the situation continues to evolve,” said the prosecution. At least 13 people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
During the prison riots, many inmates attempted to escape. According to the local police chief, 108 detainees are missing. Another 112 inmates were arrested again shortly after they managed to escape.
Since February 2021, some 350 total inmates in Ecuador have been killed in five separate prison riots. In September, riots in another Ecuadorian prison left more than 100 people dead. At least six prisoners were beheaded. In April, at least 20 people were killed in further riots in prisons across the country. Last month, 20 other inmates were killed during a riot in a prison in the south of the country.
Ecuador has overcrowded prisons. There are around 39,000 people in Ecuador’s 65 prison complexes, despite being equipped for around 30,000 inmates.
