The regional council says that there are still 100 citizens in the Mariupol steel plant

About 100 civilians are still at the Azovstal steelworks in the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol. This is reported by the regional administration of the city. Moreover, according to the council, around 100,000 civilians are still present in Mariupol itself.

The Azovstal steelworks is the last bastion of Ukrainian resistance in the port city. The more than 10 square kilometer complex is being shelled by tanks and artillery fire, the Defense Ministry in kyiv said. Moscow does not want to confirm it.

On Saturday, Ukrainian authorities reported that all women, children and the elderly had been evacuated from the Azovstal plant after mediation by the United Nations and the Red Cross. At the time, it was unknown how many of Mariupol’s 400,000 residents still resided elsewhere in the city.

According to the president of the regional administration, it is difficult to say how many civilians who remained on the spot want to evacuate.
