UN: Far more than 3,381 people are dead in Ukraine

THE head of the UN mission watching human rights situation in Ukraine stated today that thousands more civilians they have killed in the country after the war on 24 Februaryfrom the official UN report on 3,381with 1,000 of them in Mariupol alone, besieged by Russian forces, in the southeastern part of the country.

The UN team, which includes 55 experts in Ukraine, has said most of the deaths were caused by missiles and air strikes, which affect a wide area.

“We are working on estimates, but all I can say for now is that there are thousands more than the numbers we are giving you right now,” said Matilda Bogner, head of the mission investigating the human rights situation in Ukraine. in 2014, at a press conference in Geneva, answering a question about the total number of dead and injured.

“The big black hole is really Mariupol, where it is difficult for us to have full access and obtain fully verified information,” he said, referring to the port city in southeastern Ukraine that has seen the fiercest fighting in the war.

Moscow denies targeting civilians and calls the invasion a “special military operation” to demilitarize and “demilitarize” Ukraine. Ukraine and the West say this is a false pretext to launch an unprovoked offensive war.

Bogner made the remarks after a trip to Ukraine last week where she visited areas around Kyiv and Chernihiv that had previously been occupied by Russian forces.

Her team has reported at least 300 extrajudicial executions in settlements north of Kiev, including Bhutan, she said, and expects that number to rise.

They met a 70-year-old man who had been hiding for more than three weeks in a crowded basement where he was forced to sleep standing up, tying his body to wooden rails so that he would not fall. Bogner also expressed concern that both sides use schools as military bases, with heavy military equipment in some cases.

Her team is also investigating “credible allegations” of torture, ill-treatment and executions by Ukrainian forces against Russian-led invasion and armed groups.

“As far as the extent of the violations by the Ukrainian forces is concerned, while the scale is significantly larger on the side of the complaints against the Russian forces, we also record violations by the Ukrainian forces,” he said.
