Ecuadorian army arrests 200 prisoners a day after their outbreak

In Ecuador, two hundred prisoners were arrested by the army a day after their escape, Ecuadorian police reported. The men had broken out after rioting at a prison about 80 kilometers north of the capital Quito. At least 43 people were killed during the uprising.

Ecuador regularly faces violence in its prisons. Usually this involves fights between rival gangs. Monday’s riots also broke out after a battle between gangs.

Ecuadorian prisons are overcrowded. There are around 39,000 people in the country’s 65 prison complexes, while there is only room for 30,000 inmates. In 2021, a total of 321 inmates died in prison riots.
