We could not defend ourselves against Russia alone, says the Chancellor’s Chief of Staff


Germany can not defend itself against Russia without its allies in NATO, said Chancellor Wolfgang Schmidt, stressing that “the United States is particularly important for Germany, but also for Europe and NATO.”

In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Mr. Smith also said that “this is why we work so closely and well, because it is the only way to survive as an alliance of strong partners in this world” and, when asked if Germany could take on international clarified that the Federal Republic acts primarily through the European Union. That, he said, was the message that both Chancellor Olaf Soltz and French President Emanuel Macron tried to convey to Russian President Vladimir Putin before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
