VodafoneZiggo lost customers due to loss of Formula 1 broadcasting rights

VodafoneZiggo lost Internet and TV customers in the first quarter, quarterly figures showed on Wednesday. According to the telecommunications company, this is largely due to the loss of Formula 1 broadcasting rights.

Max Verstappen became world champion in the highest racing category last year and attracted many viewers. They have partly switched over now that Ziggo no longer broadcasts matches. As a result, the provider claims to have lost around 16,500 Internet customers and 24,500 TV customers.

This loss of customers did little to change VodafoneZiggo’s finances, as the company also lost less in carrying out the F1 shows and rights.

Overall, CFO Ritchy Drost calls it a “solid quarter.” More mobile subscribers have been added and the number of customers purchasing both fixed and mobile services has increased. VodafoneZiggo is noticing some competition from fiber optic providers.

VodafoneZiggo’s turnover remained stable at just over one billion euros. Operating profit increased by just over 2% compared to the previous year to reach 480 million euros.
