North Korea speaks of ‘serious emergency’ after first corona infection

North Korea officially reported corona virus infection in the country for the first time on Thursday. Chief Kim Jong-un announced a lockdown. Until now, authorities claimed that the hermetically sealed country had been protected from the pandemic.

The state news agency KCNAO, which announced the contamination, speaks of a “serious national emergency”. According to the news agency, it is the highly contagious omikron BA.2 subvariant.

North Korea’s reading that no one has contracted corona in the country in the past two years is highly implausible. For example, a year ago Kim fired several senior officials who failed to properly implement the government’s corona policy.

These employees had caused “a major crisis”, said the manager, who did not go into details. North Korea shares a difficult-to-guard border of nearly 1,500 kilometers with China. In the Chinese border city of Dandong, among other places, the number of infections has risen sharply in recent weeks.
