The first outbreak of the new coronavirus from the pandemic was officially announced today in North Korea, according to state media, which described the development as a “national emergency”.
According to the state news agency KCNA, the first and subsequent cases were found to be due to BA.2 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, which is highly contagious, after being located in the capital Pyongyang.
“This is the most serious national emergency incident” as a “quarantine gap that has been safely maintained for two years and three months” has been revealed since February 2020, the KCNA said, without specifying exactly how many cases have been reported so far. at the moment, neither what their origin is, nor when they were confirmed.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who chaired an emergency meeting of the Politburo of the Korean Workers’ Party, has vowed that the crisis will be “overcome” through the implementation of the quarantine system at its “maximum” level.
“The aim is to eradicate (the virus) from the root as soon as possible,” Kim said during the PG emergency meeting, always at the KCNA. He assured that thanks to the “strong political conscience of the people (…) we will surely overcome the state of emergency”.
