The Biden administration estimates that North Korea may be preparing for a nuclear test ahead of the US president’s trip to Asia in a few days, said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
Biden will embark on a mini-tour of Asia (May 20-24), during which he will visit South Korea and Japan for talks with his counterparts.
A White House spokeswoman said President Biden was considering a visit to the demilitarized zone in Korea.
Vaccines for Covid-19
The US government has no plans to send Covid-19 vaccines to North Korea, a White House spokeswoman told reporters.
North Korea on Wednesday announced for the first time an outbreak of Covid-19, referring to the “most serious state of emergency” and imposed a global lockdown nationwide.
According to the country’s official agency, a case of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus was detected in the capital Pyongyang.
