UN calls on conservative Poles to allow Ukrainian women to have abortions

Ukrainian women who fled to Poland should have access to contraceptive drugs and the right to abortion. This was stated on Friday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The organization wonders if Ukrainian women raped during the war can have abortions in Poland.

According to the UNHCR, the Polish law on abortion does not meet international standards. Since 2020, abortion is only allowed in the country in exceptional cases. There have been many protests in Poland against the decision, but the conservative government is sticking to strict rules.

Reports are coming in from Ukraine that people are being raped by Russian soldiers. Regulators are trying to investigate these messages.

More than three million Ukrainians have fled to Poland since war broke out in Ukraine. Women’s rights organizations are already seeing an increase in demand for abortion pills over the same period, especially from Poland and Ukraine.
