The first quarter of 2022 The average salary in Bulgaria it was 1,593 leva and decreased relative to last quarter of 2021 by 1.2%, according to preliminary data from the National Institute of Statistics released today. The average monthly gross salary was 1,566 BGN in January, 1,545 in February and 1,668 in March.
The largest decrease was observed in the sectors of education (by 16.6%), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (by 10.4%), and general government (by 8.1%). The highest increase was recorded in the sectors of financial and insurance activities (by 6.9%), and administrative and support services (by 6.6%).
In the first quarter of 2022, the average salary increased by 9% compared to the first quarter of 2021, with the largest increase recorded in the hotel sector (by 34.4%) followed by culture, sports and entertainment (32, 7%), and administrative and support service activities (17.3%). Wages remained unchanged in education and general government.
The economic activities with the highest average monthly salary in the first quarter of 2022 were recorded in the sectors of creation and dissemination of information and creative products, telecommunications (4,060 leva), financial and insurance activities (2,540 leva), professional, scientific and technical activities (2,264 leva).
Workers in the following sectors had the lowest wages: hotel sector (BGN 964), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (BGN 1,005), and other activities (BGN 1,088).
The average monthly salary in the public sector in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 1.8% on an annual basis. In the private sector it increased by 11.6%.
According to the Bulgarian National Institute of Statistics, by the end of March the workforce had increased by 8,400 (an increase of 0.4% compared to the end of 2021) to 2.27 million.
