The growing energy cost, developments on the pandemic front, the steps to be taken to tackle it and the prospects for the European economy in a difficult period due to high inflation and the health crisis are the first items on the agenda of today’s European Council and leaders of the Eurozone. Decisions on joint procurement of anti-coronavirus drugs, in addition to vaccines, are expected.
The ongoing Council meeting will also discuss the Commission’s revised recommendations on intra-EU travel and validity of the certificate, in order to avoid individual measures being taken by Member States, which confuse citizens.
At the Eurozone summit for dinner tonight, European leaders will look at the economic situation on the basis of a Eurogroup document, according to which European economy is recovering from the pandemic better than expected, while businesses are coping well with the crisis, thanks to policies implemented at Community and national level. They will also be briefed by the President of the Eurogroup on the progress of the banking union and the capital markets union.
