European Council: Tough stance against Belarus, full support for Ukraine

The European Council strongly condemns the instrumentalization of migrants and refugees by its regime Belarus and the humanitarian crisis it has created. According to her, the EU will continue to fight the hybrid attack launched by Belarus with a decisive response, addressing all dimensions of the crisis in accordance with EU law and international obligations, including fundamental rights. The European Council emphasizes in particular:

* the importance of effective EU external borders, including strengthening the EU legal framework. In this context, calls on the Council to consider the Commission proposal for temporary emergency measures

* the fight against trafficking

* the immediate implementation of the restrictive measures, following the adoption of the fifth package of registrations and the readiness to adopt additional measures if necessary

* assuring unhindered access of international organizations to Belarus and strengthening humanitarian assistance

* support for the return of migrants from Belarus

The European Council reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners and for an end to the repression of civil society and the independent media. Reiterates the democratic right of the people of Belarus to elect their President through new, free and fair elections.

Ukraine

The European Council underlines the urgent need for Russia to de-escalate tensions caused by military development on its border with Ukraine and aggressive rhetoric. The European Council reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. Any further military aggression against Ukraine will have enormous consequences and serious costs in response including restrictive measures in coordination with partners.

The European Council encourages diplomatic efforts and support for the Normandy format in achieving full implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Alarm for the Omicron variant
