The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Boris Johnson underwent a routine operation on the sinuses early in the morning, his spokesman announced.

The 58-year-old British leader had to undergo short-term general anesthesia for the operation, but returned to his apartment four hours after the operation began.

He is now recovering for a day, with any “important decisions” that need to be taken during his absence from office to Deputy Prime Minister Dominique Raab.

Mr Johnson is expected to be in office on Tuesday, but will also travel to Rwanda later in the week for a summit of Commonwealth leaders.

The operation was carried out through the NHS national health system, with opposition officials asking if the Prime Minister had been put on a waiting list for surgery, like millions of others.
