A large forest fire that broke out today in southwestern Turkey evoked memories of last summer’s fiery nightmare – which reduced hundreds of thousands of acres to ashes – and sparked fears of a recurrence.

The Anadolu news agency notes that the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds, without clarifying its causes.

In aerial shots from the local forest service, dense smoke appears to have covered the sparsely populated area, as the fire rages. Strong forces of the fire brigade are making efforts to demarcate the fire front.

Last summer’s fires were the worst in Turkish history, and the Erdogan government has been widely criticized for tackling them.
