Joe Biden and Xi Jinping have spoken four times since the 79-year-old Democrat took office, most recently on March 18.

US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he “plans to have a conversation” with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

“We have not yet decided when,” he added.

Asked about possible lifting of sanctions on many Chinese imports imposed during the days of Donald Trump’s predecessor, he said:

The Democratic president, faced with high inflation that despairs of the Americans, is under pressure to lift tariffs in order to somewhat de-escalate the avalanche of rising prices.

Formally, these duties expire on 6 July.

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping have spoken four times since the 79-year-old Democrat took office, most recently on March 18.

Their discussions reflect their desire to maintain open channels of communication, but so far they have not brought the slightest reduction in tensions in the relationship between the two largest economic powers in the world.

In addition to trade, the US and China have produced knives specifically for Taiwan.

Washington and Beijing also radically disagree over their reaction to the war in Ukraine. The Americans have been at the forefront of Western retaliation against Russia; the Chinese insist on maintaining close ties with Vladimir Putin’s government.

China, in particular, has seen a dramatic increase in Russian oil markets.

Rivalry with the Asian giant has long been a strategic priority for Joe Biden, who seeks to counter China’s ambitions in Asia, the Pacific and beyond.
