In new challenge proceeded Member of Parliament from Turkeyraising Ankara’s claims before it President of the RepublicΚατερίνας Sakellaropoulouduring Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe.

In particular, the Turkish MP, Ziya Altunyaldiz, addressing the PD, stressed: “Your Excellency, you may know that the tension in the eastern Mediterranean is unfolding at the moment, Greece says it will go to the International Court of Justice. However, in 2015 Greece renewed some reservations regarding the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice on demilitarization, the extent of national airspace, the delimitation of territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

Do you think, then, that it is possible to go to the International Court of Justice while Greece still maintains these reservations? Do not you find that such a thing is very contradictory?“.

He then received the following response from Katerina Sakellaropoulou: “Greece has recognized the mandatory jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, according to Article 36 of its Statute, since 1994. In 2015, my country renewed its recognition by making a relevant statement and adding some specific exceptions, following the example of others. European and non-European countries. On the contrary, Turkey, as we know, has not recognized the above jurisdiction of the court“.
