The Liberal Democrat candidate, Helen Morgan, won by a narrow margin of nearly 6,000 votes in the Tory nominee in the run-up to Conservative MP Owen Patterson, accused of lobbying for pay.

The Tories had won this seat, in the North Shropshire area, with a difference of 23,000 votes in 2019.

“Tonight, the people of North Shropshire have spoken on behalf of the British people. “They said it loud and clear: ‘Boris Johnson, the party is over,'” Ms Morgan said in her closing remarks.

The Conservatives have won this seat in central England continuously since the constituency was created in 1983.
