Nike is leaving Russia altogether, the American sports brand announced on Thursday. The reason for leaving is the war in Ukraine.
The departure is not a total surprise: three months earlier, the brand had suspended all its activities in Russia. For example, stores that the company operates itself have been closed. The stores that remained open are operated by independent partners, according to the sports brand.
Nike says the company’s priorities now rest with its employees. “We want to fully support them as we responsibly shut down our operations in the coming months,” the company said in a statement.
Other major Western brands such as McDonald’s, IKEA and Google have already preceded Nike. They also left Russia because of the invasion of Ukraine. However, a number of McDonald’s branches have already reopened, under a new name and with a new logo.
