Downing Street confirmed Saturday night that Brexit Secretary David Frost had resigned, announcing his letter and Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s response.

Expressing regret over the leak to the press late Saturday night, Frost also announced that his resignation was “immediate” and stressed his concerns about the “direction” the government has taken. “It is disappointing that this plan was made public tonight and in these circumstances I think it is right for me to resign immediately,” Frost said in a letter to Johnson. Earlier, the Mail on Sunday reported that the former Brexit negotiator resigned last week over “political disagreements” with the Johnson administration, which persuaded him to remain in office until January.

In his letter, Frost cites disagreements over new pandemic restrictions, tax increases and the government’s policy of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 as reasons for his resignation. Labor Vice President Angela Reiner tweeted that “the government has plunged into chaos just as the country is going through weeks of uncertainty.” “Boris Johnson is not doing for the position.
