Malaysia: More than 21,000 people evacuated from torrential rains

More than 21,000 people have been displaced by floods caused by torrential rains in Malaysia, according to the state-run Bernama news agency.

The province of Perak was the last to be hit by torrential rains, with the situation from the heavy rains becoming even worse in six other provinces.

“In total, more than 21,000 people were evacuated from their flooded homes to relief centers by noon,” the news agency reported.

More than 11,000 people fled their homes yesterday, with heavy rains starting Friday morning, blocking dozens of roads and causing transportation problems.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob told a news conference in Selangor, Malaysia’s most populous and affluent district surrounding the capital Kuala Lumpur, that 15,000 people had been evacuated to more than 100 aid centers.
