Thousands of Santa Clauses took part in a charity street race in Madrid

Thousands of people dressed as Santa Clauses took part in a charity street race in Madrid today to raise money for people affected by three months of volcanic activity on the Spanish island of La Palma.

Dressed in classic red and white suits, the runners started from the Grand Avenue Paseo de la Castellana in the city center.

Some runners preferred a sports shorts instead of the traditional red Santa Claus pants, while many wore the protective mask due to the pandemic.

Thousands of people have been displaced and at least 2,910 buildings and banana plantations have been destroyed in La Palma, the fifth largest island in the Canary Islands.

The Kubre Vieha volcano began erupting lava in September, but scientists said last week that it was expected to cease activity.
