Merkel in 30 years through her portraits (photos)


The 30-year political career of the first woman Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, through the portraits of the photographer Herlinde Koelbl, from 1991 to 2021.

This particular photographer decided to follow Merkel in politics for her work “Traces of Power”, and every year, from 1991 to 1998, she photographed and interviewed the German politician. The portraits continued after Merkel became Chancellor.

The result is now a published book, as a revealing 30-year chronicle of the effects of power on the person who exercises it.
