Russia: Import of agricultural products by Turkish and Iranian producers suspended

THE Russia suspended the imports of agricultural products, including lemons, tangerines, peppers, grapes and pomegranates from 33 Turkish and Iranian producers, citing alleged food safety violations, the regulator for consumer health said today.

Such restrictions are often seen as politically motivated, although Russia denies it.

NATO member Turkey and Russia have complicated relations, but sometimes cooperate despite a number of points of contention. Ankara recently angered Moscow when it supplied Ukraine with Bayraktar TB2 drones.

In a statement, regulator Rospotrebnadzor said 60,000 tonnes of grapes and 10,000 tonnes of pomegranates from Turkey had been banned from entering the country.
