In Project Implementation for its design national strategy for Building Information Modeling (BIM) proceeds Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (YPYME) in the context of its actions for its promotion digital transformation, which is a fundamental goal at national and European level.

This project entitled “Development of a strategic plan and roadmap for the implementation of BIM in Greece” is an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with DG REFORM and is funded by the European Union through the Structural Reform Support Program. The contractor of the project after a tender process was appointed the consulting company PwC. It started in November 2021 and is expected to be completed in April 2023.

The actions of the project concern, among others, the following:

· The analysis of the readiness of the domestic construction sector in terms of its digital transformation and in particular the utilization of BIM technology

· Identifying international good practices

· The planning of the National Strategy for the implementation of BIM in the country and the consultation with key stakeholders from the public and private sector

· The development of an Action Plan for the implementation of the Strategy, with specific milestones and objectives, as well as the prioritization of pilot programs for the promotion of BIM

· The creation of a blueprint for the development of a digital platform in the field of construction under the management of YPYME

· The development of basic specifications and standards for the implementation of BIM in Greece

· The design and implementation of training days and seminars for public and private sector executives.

BIM as a technology refers to the use of digital media for the complete representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the infrastructure, in order to form a reliable database for decision making that will aim at facilitating their design, construction and operation processes.

Utilization of BIM technology and specifications in public construction projects is promoted as a policy by the European Union, while it is already implemented in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United Arab Emirates.

Some of the potential benefits from the implementation of BIM in our country are:

1. Improved efficiency during design and construction through the easy availability of information and the accuracy of designs.

2. The saving of significant resources in the elaboration and implementation of public projects.

3. The optimal utilization of resources, resulting in the drastic reduction of the environmental footprint of the construction sector and the increase of the sustainability of the infrastructure.

4. Improved ability to manage and systematically monitor public works and existing infrastructure throughout their life cycle.
