Texas health officials say the first death of a patient infected with the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus due to complications of COVID-19 has been recorded, ABC News reported.
Omicron is dominant
It is believed to be the first death due to this variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the US, Harris County officials said, the television network added.
The victim was in his fifties, unvaccinated for COVID-19, with underlying diseases.
Earlier, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the country’s main federal public health service, said Omicron accounted for more than 73% of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the week ended December 18, something which means that it is now the dominant one.
